UMW Softball Splits Pair at Methodist University

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games at Methodist University on Sunday, topping Emory & Henry College, 7-0, and falling to Methodist, 10-9. The Eagles move to 2-1 on the season.

The Eagles scored two in the second and five in the seventh in the win over Emory & Henry. In the second, Emily Briggs led off with a single and was followed by a single by Hannah Otterman. Briggs scored on a Kerry Busby hit. Brandee Adams provided an RBI groundout for UMW's second run.

In the seventh, UMW scored five to put the game away. With one out, Alex Tenney reached on an error and moved to second on a hit by Brandee Adams. After another out, both runners advanced on a fielder's choice. Hannah Williams and Brittany Scites followed with RBI singles, and Hannah Otterman hit a two-run double to cap the scoring.

Otterman threw a three-hit shutout, walking one and striking out eight and walking one, in gaining the win.

Against Methodist, The Eagles scored first, fell behind, 3-1, tied the score, fell behind, 9-3, and tied the score with six in the seventh before falling in the eighth, 10-9. In the pivotal seventh, Emily Briggs hit a two-run double, and Emily Nykorchuk hit a three-run homer to tie the score.

The Eagles rapped out 14 hits, led by Briggs and Asselanis' three hits each, while Nykorchuk had two hits and four RBI and Adams' two hits. Otterman took the loss in relief, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Shenandoah University at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
