UMW Softball Tops Messiah, 2-1, in 2013 Season Lidlifter

Junior Hannah Williams provided an RBI double in the first inning, and freshman Stefannie Asselanis drove in the game winner in the fifth with a pinch hit single in her first collegiate at bat to lift the University of Mary Washington softball team to a 2-1 win over visiting Messiah College on Wednesday at the Battleground. The second game was stopped after four innings.

In the first, senior right fielder Brandee Adams walked and moved to second on a one-out groundout. Williams provided a double to center to plate Adams to provide UMW with an early lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth, when freshman Emily Briggs singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Adams, Asselanis was called in to pinch hit, and reached on an infield single, with Briggs scoring an important insurance run.

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Otterman kept Messiah off the board until the sixth, when the Falcons singled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The eagles closed the door from there, with Otterman scattering six hits and striking out four batters.

Otterman led the way at the plate with a pair of singles as well, while Williams doubled for UMW's only extra base hit.

The second game was called after four innings due to darkness. The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 p.m. twinbill.
