UMW Softball Edges Stevenson, 2-1, in CAC Tourney First Round

Senior Amanda Adams singled to open the fifth inning, and two outs later scored on a double by Hannah Williams, as the second seeded University of Mary Washington softball team defeated Stevenson University, 2-1, in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 23-16, and will host third-seeded Frostburg on Thursday in round two.

Mary Washington jumped on top early, scoring in the first inning, as junior left fielder Brandee Adams singled on a hustle play, stole second, and scored on a Morgan Lamon single. The game stood at 1-0 until the Mustangs scored in the fourth on a single and double - two of the only six hits they would have in the game.

The Eagles went ahead for good in the sixth, when Amanda Adams - who had two hits on the day - singled to center to lead off the inning. After a pair of strikeouts and Adams still on first, Williams connected for a double to right centerfield, plating Adams all the way from first. Freshman pitcher Hannah Otterman retired the Bobcats with a pair of ground balls and a popup to end the game.

Adams, Lamon, and Bireet Chitty all singled twice for the Eagles, while Williams singled and doubled. Otterman allowed one earned run on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Frostburg State University on Thursday in the second round. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
