UMW Softball Sweeps Stevenson in CAC Twinbill

The University of Mary Washington softball team erupted for eight runs in the opener and came from behind in thrilling fashion in sweeping a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Stevenson University on Tuesday in owings Mills, Md. The Eagles won the opener, 8-2, then took the nightcap, 4-3. UMW improves to 19-15 overall, and 8-2 in league play.

In the opener, ever player in the Eagle lineup had at least one hit, with junior Brandee Adams gaining three hits, and Hannah Williams singling, doubling, and driving in two. Freshman pitcher Hannah Otterman gained the win, allowing two runs on six hits in sveen innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Game two saw the Eagles fall behind, 3-1, after two innings, but post solo runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh for the 4-3 victory. In the fifth, Hannah Williams singled, moved to second on a single by Morgan Lamon, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Brittany Scites. In the sixth, with the Eagles trailing, 3-2, freshman Alecia Boykin hit her first collegiate home run to tie the score at three. In the seventh, Lamon led off with a double, and pinch runner Koah Chitty moved to third on a bunt and scored on a asacrifice fly by Scites.

Senior Danielle Cunetta gained the win in  relief, pitching three hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Annie Blaine started and allowed two earned runs on five hits in four innings.

The Eagles will visit Mary Baldwin College on Wednesday for a nonleague doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
