UMW Softball Sweeps Frostburg, 4-3 and 7-6

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Frostburg State University, 4-3 and 7-6,, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 14-18 overall, and 6-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In the opener, the Eagles were led by junior Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton), who hit a three run homer in the first inning in a pouring rain. The Eagles had just two hits in the game, the other being a single by Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett). Freshman Julianne Sweat (Chesterfield, Va., Cosby) earned the win for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on five hits in four innings.

The nightcap saw the Eagles fall behind 2-0, jump ahead, 4-2, and come from behind late for a 7-6 win. Bireet Chitty (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) was the hitting star for UMW, with a double, home run, and run-producing single, scoring three runs and driving in four. Sophomore Brandee Adams (Waverly, Va., Tidewater Academy) had two hits for the Eagles as well.

Junior Nicole Black (Stafford, Va., North Stafford) got the win for UMW, allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Stevenson University in another CAC twinbill starting at 3:30 p.m.
