The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 decision to 15th ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. The Eagles close the season with a record of 17-8.
Much as the Eagles did in their 6-3 regular season loss to the Blue Jays, UMW gained a pair of wins in doubles play. Seniors Rishi Charan Shankar and Peter Leese scored an 8-5 victory at one doubles, and that victory not only gained a point, but also tied the UMW school season record for doubles wins with their 33rd, first achieved by 2004 NCAA doubles champions Paul Bristow and Dan Uyar.
Senior Andrew Cooper and junior Artis Hart scored an 8-6 win at three doubles, and UMW carried a 2-1 lead to singles. Charan Shankar quickly scored a win at one, 6-1 (ret.), giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Then the Blue Jays scored straight set wins at three and four, and another in three sets at two, while freshman Evan Fisher gained a 6-4, 6-4 victory at six singles, and the match - tied 4-4 - came down to five singles. Leese battled to the end at five, but fell in three sets, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Charan Shankar and Leese will advance to the NCAA Division III doubles championship on May 25-27 in St. Louis, Mo.
