The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team dropped all three doubles macthes, but rebounded to win the first five singles decisions in winning the 2023 Coast-to-Coast AThletic Conference Championship on Sunday in Newport News, Va. The Eagles improve to 10-9 on the season.
After falling in three tough doubles matches, UMW got on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Brock Ladehoff at four over Praneet Varade, and Rishi Charan Shankar followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at one over Lucas Chen. Andrew Watson scored a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win at two over Andre Mardirossian, and Artis Hart scored a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win over Sam Hall at three, setting the stage for Peter Leese, who scored a 6-4, 6-3 win at six over Aziz Albayouk for the clinching point.
Watson was named as the tournament MVP, with Hart and Charan Shankar gaining all-tournament honors.
The Eagles will await their fate for the NCAA Tournament, with announcements for qualification coming on Monday.
