Hutchison, Watson, Charan Shankar and Helbling Gain Top Honors on All-C2C M. Tennis Team

Senior Moses Hutchison, junior Andrew Watson, sophomore Rishi Charan Shankar, and head coach Todd Helbling all gained major awards as the 2022 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis All-Conference Team was announced today. Hutchison gained Player of the Year and teamed with Watson for the doubles team of the year, while Charan Shankar was named the league's top scholar athlete, and Helbling gained Coach of the Year.

Hutchison gains the 2022 C2C Player of the Year after finishing the regular season with a 19-12 record in singles, including a 17-8 mark against Division III competition. He is currently ranked third in the Atlantic South Region in singles play, having gained All-America honors in the fall after winning two of three matches at the ITA Cup. With 71 career singles wins, he is on pace to finish his career in the top five in school history in singles wins. He is a two-time All-American in singles.

Hutchison and junior Andrew Watson claim the C2C Doubles Team of the Year after posting a 23-6 regular season record, including a 21-3 mark against Division III opponents. They are currently ranked first in the Atlantic South by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and posted an 11-match win streak this spring.

 

Charan Shankar was named the C2C Scholar Athlete of the Year after finishing the regular season with an 18-7 singles record at two singles, and a 20-4 mark at two doubles with Nick Spera. A computer science major, Charan Shankar is ranked #12 in region in singles and #9 in doubles, and is a member of the Dean's List, the UMW and C2C Academic honor rolls.

Helbling claims the conference coach of the year award for the 14th time, as his Eagles are 13-5 on the season and ranked 19th in the nation. The Eagles are ranked third in the Atlantic South Region, and Helbling's squad has defeated eight nationally-ranked opponents this Spring. Helbling, in his 23rd season at UMW, will look to lead UMW back to the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time this spring.

Hutchison, Watson and Charan Shankar all gained first team honors in singles, and were joined on the second team by senior Cole Tecce and sophomore Peter Leese. In doubles, Hutchison and Watson as well as Charan Shankar and Nick Spera were named to the first team, while Tecce and Leese were named to the second team.
