The 22nd ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team snapped an 11-match losing streak to 17th ranked Carnegie Mellon University, defeating the Tartans, 8-1, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 9-3 on the season.
The Eagles picked up an easy win at one doubles, as All-Americans Moses Hutchison and Andrew Watson gained an 8-1 win over Jonathan Nottingham and Michael Fourchy. Two and three doubles were very tight, but the Eagles scored an 8-7 win at two, with Rishi Charan Shankar and Nick Spera topping Matthew Poh and Sam Gibson, and another 8-7 win at three, with All-Americans Cole Tecce and Peter Leese downing Brandon Aprill and William Wang.
In singles, Hutchison defeated Aprill, 6-4, 6-1, and at two Charan Shankar bested Gibson, 6-4, 6-1. Watson defeated Nicholas Wernink, 7-5, 6-3, at three, and Tecce beat Derek Wong, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, at four, and Spera defeated Benny Zhou, 5-7, 6-2,10-6, at five.
The Eagles will return to action on Friday, when they visit Haverford College at 4:00 p.m.
