UMW Men's Tennis Completes Day One at ITA Regional

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team had a successful day one at the ITA South/Southeast Regional, hosted by the Eagles at the Hegmann Tennis Complex.

In singles, the Eagles have two players remaining in the round of 16. Senior Moses Hutchison defeated Barrett Foster of Hampden-Sydney, 6-3, 6-1, and then Josiah Myers-Lipton of Swarthmore, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to Saturday's round of 16. Also advancing is sohomore Rishi Charan Shankar, who downed Eddy Porsmyr-Hansen of Christopher Newport, 6-3, 6-3, and then Martinho Gonsalves of Averett, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to Saturday.

Also in the championship draw, Cole Tecce and Nick Spera picked up first round victories before falling in the second.

In doubles, the Eagles saw four doubles teams advance to the round of 16! Artis Hart and Priyan Desilva defeated Brewen/Vigdorchuk of Lynchburg, 8-5, and then Kistler/Kurani of Washington & Lee, 8-7 (4). Tecce and Peter Leese defeated Kernagis/Hellinger of Johns Hopkins, 8-4, and then fifth seeded Nottingham and Poh of Carnegie Mellon, 8-6.

Charan Shankar and Spera defeated Veleanu/Adams of Dickinson, 8-2. Hutchison and Watson defeated Grebenkin/Zhou of Carnegie Mellon, 8-5, to also advance.

The Championships will continue at the Hegmann Tennis Complex on Saturday.
