YORK, Pa. -- Mary Washington senior Brandon Griffin was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 28, 2017.

Mary Washington senior Brandon Griffin was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after leading 27th-ranked Mary Washington to four wins last weekend, including victories over nationally-ranked Stevens and Sewanee. Griffin defeated Danny Polk of Stevens, 7-6, 6-3, on Saturday morning, and then topped the 24th-ranked player in the country, Avery Schaser of Sewanee, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, in what proved to be the winning match in a 5-4 team win. On Sunday, he won his third thriller of the weekend with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Ioannis Brokakis of North Carolina Wesleyan, as the Eagles topped the Bishops, 8-1. He picked up key wins in doubles against Stevens, Sewanee, and NC Wesleyan with Matt Miles at the No. 2 position. He was a perfect 6-0 on the week as UMW remained undefeated against NCAA Division III opponents.​

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Five CAC teams were in action last week ... York opens its spring season on March 11, while Penn State Harrisburg opens up on March 16 ... Christopher Newport edged Chowan 5-4 in its lone matchup of the week. Facing a 5-2 deficit in the second set of the match-clinching battle at No. 4 singles, CNU freshman Dominic Lacombe rallied for a thrilling comeback victory to help the Captains clinch a 5-4 win over the 50th-ranked Hawks. David Reed won both of his matches at No. 1 singles and doubles against Chowan, including an 8-4 doubles win over a regionally-ranked tandem along with partner Justin Cerny ... Frostburg State was idle last week and will return to the court on March 13 vs. Geneva ... Jonathan Gorel won both of his No. 1 singles matches as St. Mary's opened up its spring portion of the 2016-17 schedule. Gorel needed to rally in both of his matches to notch the victories. At Randolph-Macon, he won the third-set, 6-2, after winning the first set, 6-3, then falling 2-6 in the second. At No. 27 Mary Washington, Gorel came back from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 ... Salisbury freshman Colt Williams went a perfect 7-0 last weekend combined in singles and doubles play, leading Salisbury to a 4-0 week as a team. He is 11-0 through the first two weeks of his career ... Southern Virginia opened its spring season with an 8-1 win at home over Roanoke. Thomas John Snelson won at No. 1 doubles 8-4 and No. 1 singles 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
