UMW's David Lunding-Johansson, Haley Kane Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

University of Mary Washington seniors David Lunding-Johansson and Haley Kane - the winners of the UMW Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year - have both been selected as first team choices on the 2016 College Sports Information Directors Association Academic All-District at-large teams, announced today.

Lunding-Johansson, who graduated in May with a 3.902 GPA, was awarded the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. Lunding-Johansson concludes his outstanding four-year career with the Eagles this spring, leading the team to his fourth CAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. As a standout on the men's tennis team, he could go as high as #4 in All-Time career wins at UMW. He currently has 152 career wins, and has been a four year starter and extremely successful in singles and doubles during his career. He is 78-36 in singles and 61-31 in doubles. An All-CAC first team selection for 3 years, he was chosen as the 2012 CAC Rookie of the Year, and honored as a member of the CAC 25th anniversary team as one of the top 25 players in conference history. Led team to three CAC Championships and three NCAA appearances and national ranking in his first three years.

He has been named to the Virginia State Sports Information Directors' Association's academic all-state team for two years, and is a three-time Academic all-conference selection. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Beta Delta Honor Societies.

Kane gained first team honors on the women's at-large team. Kane will go down as perhaps THE most decorated student-athlete in school history for athletics and Academics. A Psychology major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, she concluded her career this fall as a third team All-American, gaining All-America honors for the second straight year. She collected all-region honors for the fourth straight time after finishing third in school history in assists. She finished with 36 goals and 28 assists, good for 100 career points. She was a first team all-conference pick as well.

Academically, she repeated as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's NCAA Division III Scholar Athlete of the Year in the second year of the award's existence, given to the All-American with the highest cumulative grade point average. Her other accolades include 2015 UMW Scholar Athlete of the Year, 2015 NFHCA Division III National Scholar Athlete of the Year, 2012-2015 UMW Honor Roll, 2012-2015 NFHCA National Academic Team, and 2012-2015 NFHCA National Scholar of Distinction. She was one of three UMW graduates to graduate with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Both will now considered for Academic All-America honors.
