League Champion UMW Men's Tennis Dominates 2016 All-CAC Team; Miles Named Rookie of the Year

YORK, Pa. - Salisbury senior Eric Spangler capped off his career as a four-time CAC men's tennis singles and doubles all-star, and earned the sixth CAC Player of the Year award in program history to highlight the 2016 All-CAC Men's Tennis team. Spangler is the first Sea Gull to earn Player of the Year accolades since Scott Burtzlaff in 2009. Spangler earned first team honors at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, teaming with fellow senior Shanon Gunther for the doubles award. It marks the third-straight first-team singles honor for Spangler, who was also a second-team singles pick and Co-Rookie of the Year in 2013. In doubles, he has now claimed a pair of first team (2016, 2013) and a pair of second team (2015, 2014) honors. Gunther was a second-team doubles honoree in 2014.

Mary Washington, which won its 17th consecutive CAC title this spring, swept the remaining first-team spots in singles and doubles. Senior David Lunding-Johansson (2nd singles, 3rd doubles), sophomore Eric Hurwitz (3rd singles, 2nd doubles), and freshman Patrick Hughes (5th singles, 3rd doubles) each nabbed first-team honors in singles and doubles. Lunding-Johansson has now received all-conference singles honors four-straight times and is a three-time first-team doubles selection. Hurwitz was a repeat singles first-teamer.

UMW freshman Matt Miles was named the CAC Rookie of the Year, becoming the 11th Eagle to receive the award. Miles joined teammates Lunding-Johannson (2013 Co-ROY) and Brandon Griffin (2014) as top conference newcomers. Miles (4th singles) and classmate Derek Hagino (6th singles) also earned first-team All-CAC singles recognition for the Eagles, while Miles teamed with junior Brandon Griffin for a second-team nod at No. 1 doubles. Griffin was also a second-team pick at No. 1 singles, giving him three all-conference awards in both singles and doubles so far in his career. Sophomore Nolan Perugini teamed with Hurwitz in No. 2 doubles as a first-team honoree.

UMW head coach Todd Helbling was honored by his peers as the CAC Coach of the Year for the second-straight year and 12th time in the last 15 years. He has won the Men's Tennis Coach of the Year award more than anyone else in CAC history.

Christopher Newport was well-represented on the All-CAC squad with five second-team singles recipients and a pair of second-team doubles squads. Sophomore Justin Cerny (2nd singles, 2nd doubles) and junior Arttu Fiva (5th singles, 3rd doubles) led the Captains as second-team selections in both singles and doubles. Fiva earned his third-straight second-team singles honor, while Cerny was a repeat all-conference selection after earning first-team singles accolades in 2015.

Joining Cerny and Fiva on the second-team singles list were junior Steven Boslet (3rd singles), senior Chiraag Shetty (4th singles), and sophomore Dillon Sykes (6th singles). In doubles, sophomore David Reed (2nd doubles), the 2015 Rookie of the Year, and freshman William Tang (3rd doubles) were also tabbed as second-team all-stars.
