#26 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #28 Johns Hopkins, 5-4, on Sunday

The 26th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team jumped out strongly in both doubles and singles, and came away with a 5-4 decision over 28th ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 16-9 on the season, and pick up their first win over JHU since 2008.

The Eagles gained the first point of the day at two doubles, as Eric Hurwitz and Nolan Perugini won, 8-3, over David Perez and Justin Kang. At one, Brandon Griffin and Matt Miles took the last three points to top Hopkins, 8-6, before the Blue Jays got on the board with a win at three doubles, as Nicholas Garcia and Emerson Walsh beat David Lunding-Johansson and Patrick Hughes, 8-4.

After Miles fell at four, 6-1, 6-1, to Perez, Derek Hagino won at six, 6-1, 6-3, over Eshan Dave, and Lunding-Johansson won at two, 6-2, 6-3, over Dubin. Hughes gained the winning point at five, topping Walsh, 6-4, 6-3.

The Blue Jays took two three-setters at one and three to close the final to 5-4. Brandon Griffin fell to at one, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, to Andrew Buxbaum, and Hurwitz fell at three to Garcia, falling 6-4 in the third set after splitting the first two, 3-6, 6-1.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia University in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals at 4:00 p.m.
