The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team competed this weekend at the Navy Invitational against Division I opposition.
The top finisher for the weekend was Brandon Griffin, who advanced all the way to the finals of the C draw in singles. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
In the A singles flight, Stratton Gilmore won a match against Michael Nguyen of American University, 7-5, 6-4. In the B flight, David Lunding Johansson defeated Fernando Sala Sanchez of George Washington, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round.
Eric Hurwitz advanced to the consolation final of the C bracket, downing Venkatesh Ramkumar of Delaware, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Matt Miles advanced to the consolation final of the D bracket.
In doubles, Miles and Max Fritsch went 4-0 in C doubles over the weekend to lead the way.
The Eagles will return to action next weekend as they host the ITA regional championship.
