UMW’S CAREY AND HELBLING, CNU’S REED GAIN MAJOR AWARDS AS 2014-15 VASID ALL-STATE COLLEGE DIVISION MEN’S TENNIS TEAM ANNOUNCED

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – University of Mary Washington senior TYLER CAREY (Moseley, Va.) repeated as the Virginia State College Division Player of the Year, and Christopher Newport University freshman DAVID REED (Easely, S.C.) garnered Rookie of the Year honors, as the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association released its 2014-15 College Division Men’s Tennis team on Monday. UMW head coach Todd Helbling repeated as VaSID State Coach of the Year. Carey becomes the third player to gain two state Player of the Year honors, while Helbling wins his fifth straight Coach of the Year award, and sixth overall.
Carey, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in singles and first round in doubles, had already been named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and gained the national Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsman ship. He was the ITA Atlantic South Most Improved Player as well.
Carey leads a Mary Washington contingent that includes six players in singles and three doubles teams. Junior STRATTON GILMORE (Madison, Wisc.), junior DAVID LUNDING-JOHANSSON (Stockholm, Sweden), and senior EVAN CHARLES (Henrico, Va.) joined Carey with first team honors in singles, while freshman ERIC HURWITZ (Owings Mills, Md.) and BRANDON GRIFFIN (Upper Arlington, Ohio) gained second team honors.
Washington & Lee sophomore JORDAN KRASNER (Rockville, Md.) and Bridgewater sophomore KYLE HARTFIELD (Marietta, Ga.) rounded out the first team in singles. Second team honorees included Hurwitz and Griffin of UMW, Christopher Newport freshmen JUSTIN CERNY (Richmond, Va.) and Reed, ADAM ROSENBLAUM (Herzelya, Israel) and GRAHAM WILSON (Newport News, Va.) of Virginia Wesleyan, and TOM LEWIS (Charlottesville, Va.) of Randolph-Macon.
In doubles, Carey and Charles of Mary Washington were joined on the first team by MICHAEL HOLT (Henrico, Va.) and CHRISTOPHER HU (Ridgewood, N.J.) of Washington & Lee, and BRANDON LARSEN (Woodbridge, Va.) and THOMAS RISHCOFF (Richmond, Va.) of Bridgewater.
Second team doubles honors went to ANDREW CURTIS (Springfield, Va.) and Lunding-Johansson of Mary Washington, Gilmore and Griffin of Mary Washington, and CHRISTIAN LYNN (St. Charles, Ill.) and Hartfield of Bridgewater.
