Tyler Carey Falls, 7-5, 6-4, in NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

University of Mary Washington senior Tyler Carey fell, 7-5, 6-4, to Skyler Butts of Claremont Mudd Scripps in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III singles championship on Friday in Mason, Ohio.

Carey jumped out to an early lead in the first set, taking a 4-2 advantage, but Butts responded to take a 5-4 edge before Carey knotted the score at five. Butts closed out the set with two points for a 7-5 win.

In the second, the set stayed on serve throughout, with Butts gaining a late break for a 6-4 victory.

Carey, the CAC Player of the Year, ITA national Arthur Ashe Jr. award winner for sportsmanship and leadership, and decorated graduate of UMW, closes his breakout year nationally with a 21-12 singles record.
