#14 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #39 TCNJ, 5-2, in NCAA Tournament Second Round

The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated 39th ranked The College of New Jersey, 5-2, on Friday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Edward Hegmann Courts at UMW. The Eagles improve to 21-5, and will face seventh ranked Trinity (Tx.) on Saturday in the third round at 2 p.m.

The Eagles fell behind in dropping the first doubles match of the day, 8-3, at two, but Tyler Carey and Evan Charles won at one, 8-4, and Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson won at three, 8-4, giving UMW a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.

Freshman Eric Hurwitz won handily at six, 6-0, 6-0, to give UMW a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Brandon Griffin followed at four, with a 6-3, 7-5 win, but TCNJ gained a point at two singles. Senior Evan Charles clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at five.

The Eagles will face seventh ranked Trinity University (Tx.) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Tigers were 5-0 winners over Wilkes in the morning match.
