#18 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #37 CNU, 7-2, for 2015 CAC Championship

The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to defeat 37th ranked Christopher Newport University, 7-2, for the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Sundat at the Ed Hegmann Tennis Complex. The Eagles win their 21st CAC title overall, and 16th straight under coach Todd Helbling.

The Eagles won two of three doubles matches after trailing in all three at one point. After falling behind, 6-3, the three doubles duo of Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson battled back to 6-5, but fell, 8-6. One and two doubles battled back late to force tie breakers, with Tyler Carey and Evan Charles winning at one, 7-0, in the breaker, and Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin winning at two, 7-4.

In singles, the Eagles posted wins from Lunding Johansson at three, 6-4, 6-0, and Carey at one, 6-2, 6-1, before receiving the clinching point from Charles at five, 6-4, 6-2. Eric Hurwitz won at six, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, and Gilmore won in a third set superbreaker, 10-4, before the Captains took a win at four to move the final to 7-2.

The win marks the Eagles' 20th win of the season, and captures their 16th straight league title, and 21st overall. The Eagles will advance to the NCAA Tournament in two weeks.
