Carey Caps Stunning Comeback as #25 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #26 Swarthmore, 5-4

Sophomore Tyler Carey capped a stirring comeback at number one singles, as the 25th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team overcame three first set losses in singles to win in three sets and defeat #26 Swarthmore College, 5-4, on Sunday in Swarthmore. The Eagles improve to 12-9 on the season.

The Garnet took a 2-1 lead in doubles, as the Eagles gained just one doubles point, coming at one, as Carey and Kaleb Nguyen won, 8-2.

In singles, David Lunding-Johansson won at four, 7-5, 6-3, as just two of the six singles matches ended in straight sets. With Swarthmore leading, 3-2, UMW gained a win from Nguyen at five, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, and then junior Alex Blakhin fought off an astounding seven match points to win, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at two. With the match tied at 4-4, Carey dropped the first set, 2-6, but came back to win the next two, 7-5, 7-5, in thrilling fashion to give UMW the win.
