After dropping all three doubles matches, the Eagles fell at 1-3 singles before sophomore Will Apperson (Louisville, Ky., Ballard) won at four singles in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (4). UMW fell at five and six singles to give Emory the 8-1 win.
In other action on Friday, Washington (Mo.) University topped North Carolina Wesleyan College, 8-1; California-Santa Cruz topped Trinity (Texas), 6-3, and Cal Lutheran and Carnegie Mellon competed Friday evening.
Mary Washington will face the loser of the Carnegie-Mellon/Cal Lutheran match on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., and North Carolina Wesleyan will face Trinity at 8:00 a.m. Washington will face UC Santa Cruz at 2:00, and Emory will take on the winner of Carnegie/Cal Lutheran.
The fifth place and seventh place matches will take place Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m.
