UMW's Wichlin, Apperson, and Helbling Take Top Honors as All-CAC Men's Tennis Honors

UMW's Wichlin, Apperson, and Helbling Take Top Honors as All-CAC Men's Tennis Honors
YORK, Pa. - University of Mary Washington freshmen Sam Wichlin (Ellicott City, Md./Ellicott City) and Will Apperson (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) combined with veteran coach Todd Helbling to win the 2010 CAC regular-season title, post-season tournament championship and swept the individual awards on the 2010 All-CAC Men’s Tennis team.

Wichlin, the 2010 CAC Player of the Year, and Apperson, the 2010 CAC Rookie of the Year, each gained first-team All-CAC singles honors and second-team all-conference doubles recognition. Helbling, whose team gained 12 berths among the 25 positions on the All-CAC team, was honored by his peers as the CAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in the last nine seasons.

Wichlin is the seventh Eagle to be named CAC Player of the Year (three have been multiple winners). It’s the fifth-straight year, and the 11th time since 1998, that a UMW player was named the Player of the Year. Twice during that span, the Mary Washington player shared the award with a Salisbury player, including 2009, when Eagle standout John James was the co-winner with Sea Gull Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md./River Hill).

Apperson is the seventh UMW player, and first since James in 2006, to be named the CAC Rookie of the Year.

Teammates joining Wichlin and Apperson on the 2010 All-CAC team are senior Evan Goff (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons), junior Kaz Murata (Nashville, Tenn./Saddlebrook Prep, Fla.), sophomores Riley Baver (Wayne, Pa./Radnor), Andrew Frisk (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) and freshman Brian Hope (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI).

Murata, a second-team singles player in 2009, and Goff joined Apperson and Wichlin on the 2010 All-CAC first team singles squad while Baver, also a second-team player in 2009, and Hope were second-team singles players this year. Goff is a four-time CAC doubles all-star and paired with Murata for first-team doubles honors this year. Murata is a three-time first-team doubles all-star. The tandem of Frisk and Hope joined the team of Apperson and Wichlin as first-time honorees on the All-CAC doubles second team.

Six Salisbury players, led by Burtzlaff and classmate Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md./Faith Baptist), both first-team singles and doubles all-stars, combined for 11 positions on the 2010 All-CAC team. Burtzlaff, who was the 2007 CAC Rookie of the Year in addition to the 2009 Co-Player of the Year, joins Thomas in completing their careers as eight-time singles and doubles all-stars.

The Sea Gulls also placed juniors David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md./La Plata) on both the 2010 singles and doubles all-star units while senior Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge) was a second-team doubles partner with Lupinetti.

Lupinetti, the 2008 Rookie of the Year, is a two-time first-team singles all-star while Barnas and Nottage were second-team all-stars in 2009. In doubles action, the pairing of Barnas and Nottage moved up to first team All-CAC this season after earning second-team recognition in 2009.

York junior Ryan Harvey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Stevenson sophomore Ted Cooke (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill) were both named to the All-CAC team, as second-team honorees, for the first time in their careers.
