#22 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #29 Hampden-Sydney, 7-2

The 22nd-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated \#29 Hampden Sydney College, handing the Tigers just their second loss of the season in a 7-2 victory on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles, winners of six straight, improve to 11-10 on the year.

The Eagles opened the proceedings with an 8-3 win by freshmen Sam Wichlin and Will Apperson at three doubles. After the Tigers knotted the score with an 8-3 win at two doubles, Eagles Kaz Murata and Evan Goff pulled out an 8-6 win at one doubles to give UMW a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.

The Eagles won five of six singles matches, as Apperson, Riley Baver, and Brian Hope won in straight sets at three, four, and six. Wichlin at one and Goff at five won in three sets, as Murata fell 6-2, 4-6, 5-4, forced to retire with leg cramps.

The Eagles will close the regular season on Sunday as they host Johns Hopkins University at noon.
