UMW Swim Teams Kick Off 2011-12 at Potomac Valley Relays


The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2011-12 season by competing against Division I competition at the Potomac Valley Relays at American University on Friday. The women finished sixth among seven teams, and the men took fifth among six schools.

For the women, the 200 yard medley relay (Lindsay Ancellotti, Amber Kerico, Kelly Scott, Riley Scalzo) took eighth at 1:56.70; the 800 free relay (Robin Brazier, Tara Banks, Maddie Carinci, Ancellotti) took fifth at 8:26.86; the 300 yard butterfly relay (Kerico, Allison Martin, Elizabeth Lewan) finished sixth at 3:11.14; and the 300 backstroke relay (Brazier, Scott, Tierney Corrigan) placed fourth at 3:12.39.

The Eagles finished sixth in the 300 breastsroke relay (Kristen Callahan, Kerico, Mary-Patrick Bailey) at 3:44.18; the 500 free relay (Scalza, Caroline DeLuca, Banks, Carinci) took seventh at 5:10.94; the 400 medley relay (Scott, Callahan, Martin, Brazier) took sixth at 4:26.05; the 1000 free relay of Ancellotti and Carinci finished fifth at 11:31.10, and the 200 free relay (Lewan, Scalzo, Brazier, and Casey Williams) took eighth at 1:46.40.

The men saw the 200 medley relay (Nick Eckhoff, Peter Slattery, Billy Norfolk, Hugh Anderson) finish fourth at 1:38.17; the 800 free relay of Mike Hudgins, Eric Phung, Colin Hess, Jack McHugh finished 10th at 7:33.86; the 300 yard butterfly relay of Billy Norfolk, Nick Eckhoff, and Matt Arnold took third at 2:41.98; the 300 yard backstroke relay took 11th at 2:52.05; the 300 breaststroke relay was 10th at 3:18.14.

The 500 free relay (Matt Arnold, Nick Eckhoff, Hugh Anderson, Andrew Garafolo) took fourth at 4:19.42, the 400 medley relay (Slattery, Garafolo, Eckhoff, Hudgins) took eighth at 3:51.91; the 1000 free relay of Eric Phung and Andrew Hogan finished seventh at 10:42.66, and the 200 free relay finished ninth at 1:31.71.

Both teams will be back in action next Saturday when the Eagles host Howard University at 1:00 p.m.
