UMW Swim Teams Off to Fast Start at CAC Swimming Championships

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams are off to a fast start at the Capital Athletic Conference championships, as both teams are in first place following the first day's events.

The Eagle men saw victories from the 200 freestyle relay (Matt Arnold, Andrew Cole, Mike Hudgins, Austin Clark) with a time of 1:25.86; junior Nick Eckhoff in the 500 freestyle (4:38.98) in an event the Eagles also finished 3-4-5; freshman Alex Anderson in the 50 yard freestyle (20.97) while teammate Austin Clark took second at 21.54; and the 400 medley relay (Eckhoff, Peter Slattery, Billy Norfolk, Anderson) with a time of 3:26, breaking the conference record by .53.

The women took first in the 400 medley relay (Kelly Scott, Megan DeSmit, Amber Kerico, Robin Brazier) with a time of 3:57.54 (nine seconds off their seed time); and Megan DeSmit in the 500 yard freestyle (5:09.30), while Jessica Singer took second at 5:10.93. The Eagles took 3-4-5-6 in the 200 IM, and placed third in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Championships will continue on Saturday with prelims at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00.
