The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swimming teams kicked off the dual meet season on Saturday by hosting a pair of Division I opponents in Howard University and the College of William and Mary. Both Eagle teams defeated Howard, and both fell to the Tribe in the first dual meets under new head coach Abby Brethauer.
The UMW men topped Howard, 197-56, and fell to William & Mary, 164-97. Winners for the Eagles included Billy Norfolk (Fairfax, Va., Chantilly) in the 200 yard butterfly (1:55.41), who was followed in second place by Stephen Clendenin (Ashburn, Va., Home Schooled) (2:00.27); Nick Eckhoff (Williamsburg, Va., Jamestown) in the 100 yard freestyle (47.89), with Austin Clark (Springfield, Va., Texas Permian Basin) taking second (48.39); Clendenin in the 200 IM (1:58.05), who was followed in second by Ryan McGhee (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) (2:10.62) and in third by Nate Moyar (Mechanicsville, Va., Lee-Davis) (2:14.46).
The Eagle women topped Howard, 201-55, and fell to W&M, 182-78. Winners for UMW included Megan DeSmit (Bridgewater, Va. , Turner Ashby) in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.70) and Cameron Figuers (Cary, N.C., Cardinal Gibbons) in the 200 IM (2:13.28).
Mary Washington will visit Washington & Lee University on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
