Mary Washington men's soccer members senior Josh Kirkland, junior Carter Berg and senior Gabe Francesconi were named Division III Men's Soccer All-Americans, per a release from the United Soccer Coaches on Thursday afternoon.
Kirkland, a forward from Richmond, Va., earned First Team honors after his stellar senior season that saw him earn his third-straight Coast-to-Coast Conference's Offensive Player of the Year award. He capped off one of the more legendary careers the men's soccer program has seen -- as he was named an All-Region Player for the third-straight year as well. Kirkland led the Eagles in goals (15) and points (38) and netted a career-high eight assists in the Eagles Sweet 16 run. Too, he became at least the fourth member of the 100-point club with his early goal against Christopher Newport on Oct. 28. 2023 marks Kirkland's second All-American selection from the United Soccer Coaches.
Berg, a forward from Reston, Va., was named to the Second Team and an All-American for the first time in his career. In 2023, Berg followed closely behind Kirkland with a career-high in goals (13) and points (36), and added a team-high (and personal best) 10 assists.
Francesconi (Third Team), too, was also named to the All-American list for the first time in his career after he missed the 2022 season with an injury. After coming in as a sub for the Eagles' first two games of the season, Francesconi started each of the next 20 and quickly returned to his 2021 form. For the season, he netted career-highs in goals (four) and assists (seven).
The trio led the Eagles squad for the entire season -- one that saw them in the Top 4 of the national poll for the entire season -- spending most of the year in the No. 2 spot and two weeks as the top team at the Division III level.
