For the second time in as many seasons, the No. 2 Mary Washington men's soccer team took home the Coast-to-Coast Conference championship with its 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Platteville in Santa Cruz, Ca. on Sunday afternoon.
Carter Berg recorded his first hat trick of the season in the Eagles' victory with goals in the 15th minute, 28th minute, and in the 63rd minute.
The Pioneers scored the first goal of the morning in the 10th minute of the game before Berg tied it up with a feed from Gabe Francesconi before giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead heading into the half when he and Blake Hoskins teamed up to score in the 29th minute.
In the first half, UMW took nine total shots on four corners compared to Wisconsin-Platteville's five shots and one corner.
In the 63rd minute, Berg drew a penalty kick as he wound up and fired a shot once more and fired another goal into the back of the net for his third of the day and 11th of the season.
Wisconsin-Platteville would draw a little closer with another goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute, but UMW was able to hold on and prevail for its second-straight conference championship.
The Eagles attempted 14 total shots -- half of which were on net -- while Eagles' keeper Freddy Rogers recorded seven saves on 17 total shots.
Mary Washington will learn where it'll head for the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. The selection show will be live on the NCAA's website at 2 p.m.
