No. 2 UMW Men's Soccer Downs St. Mary's, 2-1

Two Josh Kirkland goals was all No. 2 Mary Washington men's soccer (11-1-2) needed in its 2-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) in St. Mary's City, Md. on Sunday afternoon.

After drawing with Christopher Newport on Saturday at one goal apiece, the Eagles scored twice -- both via Kirkland -- in the game's opening 30 minutes. Kirkland's two goals handed him the lead on the team (10) and into the top 50 goal scoers in all of Division III soccer.

Carter Berg assisted on Kirkland's first goal in the 24th minute, while Diego Guzman had the assist on the second in the 29th minute. 

The Eagles recorded 23 total shots, nine of which were on goal. The Eagles' defense held the Seahawks to 11 shots and four on goal.

Kirkland led the way for UMW in attempted six shots, while Guzman and Berg totaled three. Nelsar Castillo and Jordy Santana also recorded three shots each.

Eagles' keeper Freddy Rogers recorded his 11th win of the season as he saved three shots on Sunday.

Mary Washington totaled 14 corners, while shutting out St. Mary's in that category.

Mary Washington is back in action at 3 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 21, against Salisbury.
