It took a little while for No. 2 Mary Washington men's soccer to find the back of the net, but once it did, the offense didn't stop in the Eagles' 6-0 victory over York on Wednesday night in Fredericksburg, Va.
In total, UMW took 27 shots, just three fewer than it did in its first night game last week against Stevenson. But for the Eagles, they doubled their goal total from a week ago. Josh Kirkland scored first with a header off of a corner from Nelsar Castillo in the 23rd minute. Two minutes later, with the help of Gabe Francesconi, Kirkland (6) scored another to put Mary Washington up, 2-0.
Those were the two scores for UMW in the first half after recording 12 shots and five corners, while holding the Spartans to just three shots and one corner of their own.
Coming out of the half, the Eagles quickly scored again when Julian Schmugge tapped a ball to Carter Berg for the Eagles third goal of the night and Berg's seventh goal of the season. Twelve minutes later, Berg launched another shot that would end up becoming his team-leading eighth goal of the year when he dribbled past a few defenders on the way to beat York's keeper.
Will Thompson got in on the action in the 69th minute with his first goal of the season via a nice feed from Joel Albritton. And finally, UMW capped off the offensive explosion when Thomas Homa netted his first goal of the season in the 84th minute.
In all, Mary Washington tallied eight corners, holding York to just three. The Eagles totaled 16 shots on goal -- Carter Berg led the way with four (seven total shots). Kirkland finished behind him with five shots.
Mary Washington is back in action on Saturday evening with a matchup against No. 23 Lynchburg at 5 p.m. at the Battleground Turf Field.
