No. 1 UMW Men's Soccer Takes Down No. 25 Emory, 1-0

For the second time this season, No. 1 Mary Washington men's soccer (6-0) beat a ranked opponent in the form of No. 25 Emory, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Va.

Junior forward Carter Berg scored the lone goal in the 18th minute off a feed from senior midfielder Nelsar Castillo. The score was Berg's fourth of the season, which tied senior forward Josh Kirkland for a team-high.

Castillo netted his third assist of the season, tying Berg for the team lead.

Keeper Freddy Rogers recorded his second clean sheet of the season for UMW, a match in which Emory shot the ball 13 times. Rogers recorded four saves, the most since he saved seven shots in UMW's second game of the year against then-No. 7 Johns Hopkins on Sept. 3. In two ranked matches this season, Rogers has yet to yield a goal.

UMW launched a total of 19 shots -- nine on goal -- at Emory's keeper on nine corner kicks.

Kirkland, who scored twice in the victory on Friday, recorded a team-high six shots, five of which were on net. Berg had four shots.

The Eagles head on the road to No. 2 Messiah next Saturday. First touch is set for 5 p.m.
