UMW Men's Soccer Falls to Williams in NCAA Semifinal, 1-0

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Williams College on Thursday in the NCAA Division III national semifinal round in Salem, Va. The Eagles see their season end with a record of 13-5-4.

In the first half, the Ephs took command of play in the opening minutes, but the Eagles quickly settled in and carried the bulk of possession thereafter. Both teams had chances in the opening half, but neither would score, and the game went to halftime in a scoreless tie.

In the second, play remained on the Eagles' side, as they outshot the Ephs in each half by 6-4 margins. The game remained scoreless until 80:08, when Williams scored on a header from across the penalty area, which would prove to be the game's only score.

The Eagles continued to press even after falling behind, rallying for four corner kicks and several opportunities in the final minutes, including one header that was cleared by a Williams defender off the goal line.

In all, the Eagles outshot Williams, 12-8, and each team had five corner kicks. UMW senior goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger made one save, and made several other leaping knockaways on crossed balls and balls into the penalty area.

"This group has done an incredible job", said UMW head coach Jason Kilby following the game. "We really couldn't have asked for more... First of all they're great people (speaking of his team)... they're people I enjoy being around. Guys that you love, and trust... We'll always be a family."

The Eagles wrap up one of the most successful seasons in school history, advancing to the national semifinal for the second time.
