UMW Men's Soccer Tops Bowdoin, 3-2, to Advance to NCAA Division III Final Four

UMW Men's Soccer Tops Bowdoin, 3-2, to Advance to NCAA Division III Final Four

Sophomore forward Carter Berg broke open a tied contest with a pair of goals 10 seconds apart early in the second half, and the defense did the rest, as the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated Bowdoin College, 3-2, in the sectional final of the NCAA Division III tournament on Sunday in Amherst, Mass. The Eagles improve to 13-4-4 on the season, give head coach Jason Kilby his 250th career victory, and advance to the national semifinals for the second time in program history - on December 1 in Salem, Va.

In an evenly contested game, the score stood scoreless for the first 26:44. At that moment, the Eagles gained a corner kick, and senior defender Jacob Kautzman found the nets on a corner from classmate Abel Luwis, and UMW carried a 1-0 lead. Then, 10:02 later, Bowdoin found the tying score, and the score remained tied to halftime at 1-1.

Early in the second half, Bowdoin was called for a takedown in the penalty area, and Berg connected on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Incredibly, just 10 seconds later, senior Josh Kirkland's shot from deep rebounded off the keeper and right to the waiting Berg, who scored his second tally in 10 seconds, and UMW had a 3-1 advantage.

Bowdoin gained a penalty kick with 34:30 remaining in the game, but from that point on, neither side would score again, and the Eagles now find themselves in the final four for the first time since 1997, when Mary Washington hosted the national championship.

Bowdoin led in shots, 24-16, as well as corner kicks, 10-3. Senior goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger made nine saves in goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles will take on Williams College in the national semifinals in Salem, Va., on December 1 at 4:00 p.m. The Division III national championship will be in Salem on December 3.
