UMW Men's Soccer Blanks Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

Sophomore forward Carter Berg scored the game's lone goal in the 30th minute and the defense held firm in the second half against a steady wind, as the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated Ohio Wesleyan University, 1-0, on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 12-4-3 on the season, and will advance to the third round next weekend.

Playing with the prevailing wind in the first half, the Eagles had several quality opportunities in the opening 30 minutes, but were unable to finish a chance until 29:54, when sophomore Diego Guzman found Berg, who connected on a low shot that found the net beyond the grasp of the diving OWU goalkeeper.

Playing against the wind in the second half, the Eagle defense survived numerous chances from the Battling Bishops, to record its third shutout in four postseason games.

The Eagles held a 16-15 edge in shots, while Ohio Wesleyan held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks, with nine coming in the second 45 minutes. UMW goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger made six saves in recording the shutout.

Mary Washington will advance to the third round next weekend, and visit Amherst College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
