Amorose's Score Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past Marymount in NCAA Tourney 1st Round

Freshman Sammy Amorose scored the game's lone goal at 68:34 to give the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Marymount University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 11-4-3 on the season, and advance to Sunday's second round.

The Eagles applied pressure to the Saints often in the first half, outshooting the Saints, 13-3, but could find nothing to show on the scoreboard. Marymount had its chances as well, as senior goalkeeper Griffin made several stops of Saint quality shots to keep the score tied at halftime, 0-0.

Then, 13 minutes into the second half, junior Julian Schmugge streaked up the center of the field and found Amorose to his right. Amorose ran onto the perfectly-paced pass, and turned back to his right to find the open net with his short-side shot.

From there, the Eagle defense continued to excel, and UMW held on for the 1-0 shutout victory.

The Eagles led in shots, 19-6, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Hemmendinger made four saves in recording the shutout.

UMW will face the winner of this afternoon's Penn State Harrisburg/Ohio Wesleyan contest on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to next week's sectionals.
