UMW Men's Soccer Tops Roanoke, 2-1, on Saturday in Salem

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team scored a goal in each half in defeating Roanoke College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Va. The Eagles, receiving votes in this week's national United Soccer Coaches poll, improve to 4-2 on the season.

UMW again scored in the opening 10 minutes of play, with junior Aidan Shell notching his second goal of the season at 9:24 on a Frankie Gutierrez assist. The Eagles maintained the 1-0 cushion to halftime. 

The Eagles doubled its lead at 62:58, as Juan Vargas scored on an Abel Luwis assist. Roanoke trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with six minutes remaining, but the Eagles held on down the stretch.

The Eagles led in shots, 15-5, as well as corner kicks, 4-1. Senior goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger made two saves in gaining the win.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday at the University of Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m.
