UMW Men's Soccer Tops Guilford, 7-1; Kirkland Ties School Record with Four Goals

Senior forward Josh Kirkland (Richmond, Va. / Deep Run) tied the school record with four goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 7-1 victory over Guilford College on Saturday at the Battleground. Sophomore Carter Berg scored one and assisted on two more for the Eagles, who improve to 2-0 on the season.

Kirkland opened the scoring in the opening minutes, at 6:59, and added his second at 11:13 on a Berg assist. That duo would connect again at 12:46 for Kirkland's natural hat trick, and then at 22:29, Kirkland knocked in a Nelsar Castillo corner kick. The Quakers reached the scoreboard with a goal at 22:50, but UMW answered with a Gadsoni Abel goal at 42:47, and the Eagles held a 5-1 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Berg scored on a Kirkland assist at 60:41, and Edres Fekrat scored on an assist from his twin brother Elyass at 70:40 to cap the scoring.

Kirkland ties the school record with four goals in a game, tying the mark held by Tony Trepal against Gallaudet in 1992 and Mike Gutzler against Gallaudet in 1999.

UMW led in shots, 35-6, and in corner kicks, 11-2. UMW goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger had three saves in 62:30, and Altan Murray added 27:30 of scoreless relief.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Johns Hopkins University at 4:00 p.m.
