Jacob Kautzman Named UMW Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Senior soccer standout Jacob Kautzman has been named as the 2021-22 University of Mary Washington Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Kautzman, a Biochemistry major from Springfield, Va., graduated in May with a 3.723 cumulative grade-point average. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma athletic honor society, and has achieved academic success by gaining qualification for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll, as well as the UMW Athletic Honor Roll.

A starting defender for the Eagles this season, Kautzman helped direct one of the stingiest defenses in the nation, as the Eagles allowed just 16 goals in 17 games, good for a 0.91 goals-against average. For his part, Kautzman started every game, picking up an assist on the first goal in UMW's 2-1 win over Christopher Newport at Homecoming.

The defender gained first team All-Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference honors.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are the most prestigious and oldest awards given annually by the athletic department, with recipients dating back to 1990-91.

"Jacob has been a positive role model and captain for our team.  His discipline in the classroom and on the field has propelled him to become a top achiever in both areas.  We are excited for him to gain this high honor, and to have him lead our program again this Fall!"
