UMW Falls to Christopher Newport, 2-1, in C2C Men's Soccer Championship

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in the 2021 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship. The Eagles slip to 9-6-2 on the season.

The action was furious from the start, as each side scored in the opening eight minutes of play. The Eagles opened the scoring, as junior forward Josh Kirkland (Richmond, Va.) scored unassisted at 5:34, fitting the ball through traffic and inside the far right post to give UMW the lead.

CNU answered at 7:17 to knot the score, and the contest remained tied well into the second half. The Captains found the eventual game winner with 14:33 left in regulation.

The Eagles led in shots, 15-8, and each team had four corner kicks. UMW senior goalie Ken Kurtz (Katonah, N.Y.) made three saves in net for the Eagles.

UMW will now await a potential NCAA Tournament at-large bid. The NCAA Tournament selection show will occur on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
