Late Push Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past Stevenson, 2-1, on Wednesday

Facing a 1-0 deficit, the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team rallied for two goals in the final 10 minutes to defeat visiting Stevenson University, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-2-1 on the season.

The Eagles applied great pressure early on, gaining four corner kicks in the opening four minutes of play, but were unable to connect on the crossed balls for a score. Stevenson countered with a score off a throw in at 16:01, and the Eagles found themselves in a 1-0 hole for the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, the Eagles had the bulk of the scoring chances, and junior Gabe Francesconi (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern Regional), knotted the score at 1-1 off a cleared attempt at the top of the box with 9:29 remaining in regulation. That score set the stage for junior Abel Luwis (McLean, Va. / Hearts of the Lord), who at 83:55 took a cross from sophomore Julian Schmugge (Towson, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) and fired a one touch past the diving goalkeeper to give UMW a late lead that would stand up to the final horn.

The Eagles held a 16-5 lead in shots, as well as an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. UMW goalie Ken Kurtz made a pair of saves, as well as several quality clears on entered passes into the penalty area on the day.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday, when they visit Newport News to take on Christopher Newport University in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference opener at 7:00 pm.
