#21 UMW Men's Soccer Blanks Shenandoah, 2-0, on Wednesday Night

Junior Josh Kirkland (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) and junior Abel Luwis (McLean, Va./Hearts of Lord) scored goals within a 2:51 span at the start of the second half to lead the #21 ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Shenandoah University on Wednesday night in Winchester, Va. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Eagles held a comfortable 8-4 advantage in shots at intermission, but had nothing to show on the scoreboard. QUickly, UMW jumped ahead on Kirkland's first tally of the season at 46:30 on an assist from junior Gabe Francesconi (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern Regional). Just 2:31 later, Luwis gave the Eagles an insurance tally, which would hold up for the remainder of the contest.

UMW led in shots, 11-5, as well as in corner kicks, 9-0. UMW senior goalie Ken Kurtz (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) had two saves in recording his third straight shutout to open the season.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they visit #17 Johns Hopkins University on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
