Santana's Score Leads #21 UMW Men's Soccer Past N.C.Wesleyan

Freshman midfielder Joren Santana (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) scored the game's lone goal in the 41st minute, as the 21st ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated North Carolina Weleyan College, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the UMW Soccer Classic. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.

In a spirited affair that brought intense play throughout, nine yellow cards and one red card were issued. In the first half, play was fairly even, with each team registering three shots. Santana's goal came on a slide from the right of goal and a touch from Kevin Leong.

From there, UMW would control the action with their offense, as they outshot the Bishops, 8-1, in the second half, although the score would stand at 1-0 as the final buzzer sounded.

UMW senior goalkeeper Ken Kurtz (Katonah, N.Y. / Somers) made two saves in gaining his second straight shutout. NCWC keeper Matteo Torchio had three saves on the day.

The Eagles led in shots, 11-4, as well as in corner kicks, 5-2.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Shenandoah University at 7:00 p.m.
