Gabriel Soriano Named 2019-20 UMW/Orthopedic Specialty Clinic Comeback Athlete of the Year

University of Mary Washington senior men's soccer All-America Gabriel Soriano has been named as the 2019-20 UMW/Orthopedic Specialty Clinic Comeback Athlete of the Year, as selected by the UMW athletic training staff.

In September 2018, Soriano had surgery for a ruptured appendix, and because the appendix was ruptured he had to have more invasive open surgery instead of a laparoscopic surgery and then was hospitalized for 10 days due to complications from the surgery and the illness. He lost 17 pounds and was unable to complete the rest of the season, ending his junior season after just nine games.

This fall, Soriano returned to lead the Eagles to a third consecutive CAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth, scoring a team-high eight goals with a team-high seven assists for 23 points, in gaining first team All-America honors from the Uniter Soccer Coaches. This spring, he has been named as the UMW Male Fall Athlete of the Year, as the lone male All-America at the school this year.

In addition, he won first team all-conference, all-state, and all-region honors, and was named as the Virginia Sports Information Directors' College Division Player of the Year.
