Gabriel Soriano Named 2019-20 UMW Male Fall Athlete of the Year

Senior men's soccer first team All-America selection Gabriel Soriano has been named as the 2019-20 Fall Male Athlete of the Year at the University of Mary Washington.

Soriano led the men's soccer team to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance this November after claiming its third consecutive Capital Athletic Conference Championship. He scored eight goals and added seven assists from his midfielder position in claiming first team All-America honors, just the second Eagle since 1997 to gain first team honors.

He was a first team All-Capital Athletic Conference selection, first team all-region, first team all-state college division by VaSID, as well as the College Division State Player of the Year.

"Gabriel is an exceptional person that has worked tirelessly in the classroom, weight room, and on the field while working a part-time job throughout his college career", said head coach Jason Kilby. "He's a great example of where hard work, consistent training, and opportunity aligned. His focus on improving his game over the past four years propelled him to become one of the best midfielders in the nation. What makes Gabriel special is his resilience, calm competitive demeanor and savvy left foot.  He has left a large footprint within our soccer program!"

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UMW Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards will be divided into each of the three sports seasons (fall, winter, and spring). The Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards will be released as usual following the posting of final grades in May.
