The 2019 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Men's Soccer Awards have been unveiled with St. Mary's senior Khalid Balogun being named CAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Christopher Newport senior Derek Cook claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Mary Washington's Josh Kirkland garnered CAC Rookie of the Year accolades along with Salisbury senior Ryan Spadin who collected CAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition.
Balogun was named CAC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 16 goals - six more than his nearest competitor. His 36 points put him ten clear of the field as the 6-foot-4 senior also captured his fourth straight season as a first team All-CAC honoree, including Rookie of the Year honors in 2016.
Cook was selected as CAC Defensive Player of the Year after he anchored the CNU backline that took the Captains to the 2019 CAC regular season title. He led a group of CNU defenders with allowed only four goals in ten conference matches this season.
Kirkland earned CAC Rookie of the Year distinction after scoring six goals in his debut season at Mary Washington. The Eagles used the freshman forward to propel UMW to the second seed in the league tournament thanks to the league's most profilic offense -- scoring 32 goals in conference play.
Spadin, a biology major with high marks, has proved himself both inside the classroom and on the playing field and is the inaugural CAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer. Spadin, a senior midfielder, posted a pair of goals and an assist in 19 contests this season for Salisbury.
CAC regular season champions Christopher Newport earned CAC Coaching Staff of the Year distinction after Justin Chezem had a successful first year at the helm of the Captains.
