#11 UMW Men’s Soccer Falls at CNU, 2-0, on Saturday

The eleventh-ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team fell at Christopher Newport University, 2-0, on Saturday evening in Newport News, VA. The Eagles slip to 7-2-2 overall, and 2-1 in the CAC.

In the early going, the Captains got out to a fast start as they recorded two shots on goal that were saved away by Kenny Kurtz. UMW tried to counter-attack off of CNU's mistakes but were called offsides, three times in the first 15 minutes. The Captains got on the board in the 20th minute as they were able to slide a ball just past Kurtz to go up 1-0.

CNU added a second goal in the 24th minute as the Captains put home a ball after Kurtz was knocked to the ground to take a 2 goal advantage. Kurtz made some tough saves throughout the rest of the half to keep the deficit at just two.

Just five minutes into the second half, Ben Ahrens had a shot on goal from outside of the 18 that was saved by the tip of the CNU goalie. In the 69th minute, the Eagles stayed on the attack and Jeremy Hokenson had a header that was blocked before reaching the goal.

A team save from the Captains in the 74th minute after a Noah Mazzatenta shot, kept the game at 2-0. UMW tried to fight back to get back in the game but was unable to. The Eagles will face CNU again on Homecoming and will look forward to that match.

The Eagles had nine shots and two corner kicks. Kurtz made six saves in goal for UMW.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia at 4 p.m.
