The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated Frostburg State University, 4-2 in penalty kicks, after a scoreless draw in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the UMW Battleground Complex. The Eagles are set to host St. Mary's, as they look for back-to-back CAC titles, on Saturday in the championship at a time TBA.

In the first half, both teams had chances early on. Joshua Everard had the first chance of the game as he sailed a header just over the crossbar in the fourth minute. The Bobcats had their first opportunity in the 19th minute but Ken Kurtz was there to make the save. 

Just four minutes later, Kurtz made his only other save in the game off of a header that he jumped just a tad early but got his had on to deflect it away. Joe Hatcher had two looks at a shot on goal, one in the 28th minute and one in the 36th, that were turned away by the keeper and then a team save. The two teams went into half tied at 0-0.

The Eagles earned a penalty kick in the 50th minute, but the keeper for the Bobcats came up with a huge save to keep the game knotted up at zero. UMW's defense dominated the second half as they allowed just one shot that came in the 53rd minute and was blocked away. 

UMW had another great chance at goal in the 87th minute as Jeremy Hokenson broke loose behind the back line and played it across the goal to Ryan Van Maanen but the shot was blocked by a Bobcat defender.

In the two overtimes, both teams combined to just take one shot. The Eagles had that lone shot as Hatcher found himself open inside of the 18 and tried to head one past the keeper but again UMW was denied. The game then went into a penalty shootout, the first for both teams this season.

After a Bobcat scored the first penalty shot, Jacob Lovinger came up and banged his home. Kurtz then made two key saves in a row to give the Eagles a two goal advantage. It was all up to the field players to put their shots away, and they did just that. Ben Ahrens, Gary Foley, and Hatcher clinched the match for UMW and helped them advance to the CAC finals.

The Eagles outshot Frostburg State, 17-4, and had 10 corner kicks.

UMW will host St. Mary's in the CAC Championship on Saturday at a time TBA.
