UMW Men's Soccer Opens Up 2018 Campaign With 2-1 Win Over N.C. Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated the North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops, 2-1, on a game-winning goal from freshman Matt Pron on a hot Friday afternoon in the UMW Soccer Classic.

UMW opened the game with a goal just 2:29 into the game. Senior Will Donohoe scored his first collegiate goal on a throw-in from Gary Foley. The ball trickled through the defense and ended up on the leg of Will Donohoe to put the Eagles up early.

The Battling Bishops tied the game up at the 16:42 mark on a ball that got just past the keeper in a one-on-one situation.

From there, UMW scored the game-winning goal with 30:12 to play. Pron put away a ball that was mishit from the keeper for his first goal on the season. The Eagles had some chances in the second half including a goal, but it was called offsides.

UMW had eight total shots and seven corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Ken Kurtz made four saves for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action tomorrow evening as they will face Hampden Sydney at 5 p.m. as part of the UMW Soccer Classic.
