UMW Men's Soccer Tops Frostburg in CAC Tournament 1st Round on Saturday, 3-1

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-1 halftime lead and extended the margin in the second half in a 3-1 victory over Frostburg State University on Saturday at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference Tournament first round action.UMW improves to 13-4-1 on the season.

Mary Washington jumped ahead at 18:59, when Ryan Van Mannen scored on a free kick that came after a touch from Gary Foley. The Eagles extended the lead to 2-0 at 32:16, as Joshua Everard scored unassisted. The Bobcats got on the board at 44:04 on a goal from Alferid Kemal. UMW scored an apparent goal at the final horn of the half, but it came just after the horn had sounded, so the Eagles carried a 2-1 lead to intermission.

In the second, the lone score came from junior Justin Carey, who headed in a cross from Van Maanen at 57:10.

UMW led in shots, 17-9, as well as in corner kicks, 5-3. UMW senior goalie Matt Spencer had three saves, while Frostburg's Juan Bofill had five stops.

Mary Washington will advance to Wednesday's CAC semifinals at St. Mary's College. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
