Van Maanen, Carey Lead UMW Men's Soccer Past #19 Lynchburg, 2-1, on Thursday Night

Juniors Ryan Van Maanen and Justin Carey each scored goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team past 19th ranked Lynchburg College, 2-1, on Thursday evening in Lynchburg. The Eagles improve to 3-1-1 on the season.

Van Maanen started the scoring at 23:05, and the Eagles continued on to halftime with the one-goal advantage. In the second, Carey added an important insurance score at 63:30, on an assist from Gary Foley. Lynchburg cut the deficit to 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining, but the Eagles held on for the big victory.

The Hornets led in shots, 14-12, and UMW held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Matt Spencer made six saves for the Eagles, while Dylan McLaurin had two stops for the Hornets.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host Roanoke College at 2 p.m.
